After media speculation throughout Monday that he had decided to quit, the former prime minister took on the rebels who had demanded his resignation and won, report media.<\/p>\n

At a 1am press conference this morning he said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe it\u2019s best for the party to maintain the current leadership, with me as leader and Kristian Jensen as deputy leader. We are both aware of the challenges that lie ahead and we both know there would have been alternative challenges if I\u2019d stepped down. No matter what decision was made we are facing a major reaction but together we\u2019re ready to move forward and heal the wounds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Had expected him to quit<\/h2>\n

He also guaranteed delegates that there would be no more expense account problems.<\/p>\n

Throughout Monday, sources close to Mr L\u00f8kke Rasmussen expected him to quit as it appeared unlikely he would be able to put together the majority needed from the 132-strong executive committee to avoid a vote of no-confidence.<\/p>\n
