And if your studies are located further away, if the weather is crappy, or if you are simply of the lazy kind, several buses and DR Byen Metro station is within immediate reach, enabling you to move around Copenhagen easily.

Beer and ice cream time

As a student, I know student life can be terribly stressful, and sometimes you just need to get away from city chaos and nurture your inner hippie.

Luckily, both enjoying the calm of nature and stress-relief are just a few minutes away, at Amager Fælled park.

Or you can relax with a beer and an ice-cream on Islands Brygge, or take a swim at Amager Beach easily. Both are located just a short bicycle trip away.

Inaccessibility

Although the neighbourhood may be described as somewhat questionable, let me assure you that living at Scandis you may feel perfectly safe.

This is because it is near to impossible to move around the dorm if not a resident. To enable ones electronic doorbell, a phone needs to be used, and I feel rather certain that I am not the only resident who never bought one, forcing my friends to call my mobile phone for me to come let them in.

And getting in isn’t the only problem. At Scandis, visitors can´t even leave without a tenant letting them out!

Apartment-like rooms and common facilities

This far from modern 70’s building has only been used as a dorm since the early 80’s. Up until then it was a hotel, and despite it being somewhat renovated when it was transformed into a dorm, traces of its old identity may still be found.

For example, the elevator gives you the choice between visiting the 1st – 4th floor, or the bar/cafeteria. The latter, however, died with the hotel.

Scandis now offers a mixture of single and double room apartments. All have private bathrooms, but the biggest difference is that while 2 bedroom apartments have their own kitchens, 1 bedroom tenants only have private kitchenettes, with additional access to a shared kitchen.

Large but dark

The unfurnished 1 bedroom apartments appear rather large compared to the ”typical” student rooms, and the space is utilized through a great solution of having a row of closets ‘hanging’ from the ceiling.

In fact, they appear more like tiny apartments than typical dorm rooms. But despite the walls being white, as the rooms are rectangular rather than square, with only one window, located in the far corner, they still appear rather dark.

And while half the tenants enjoy a nice green view of the garden, the other half are left gazing upon neighbouring apartment buildings.

Rent includes most amenities

Also, as is a problem with many dorms, the walls are not especially sound proof. Still, I have the impression that we are rather good at respecting each other and the general rules and curfews.

Additionally, Scandis offers further storage space in the basement, internet access, about 15 TV channels, and laundry, all of which are included in the rent.

To be assigned a room at Scandis, you have to be a student, resulting in people generally living here for only a limited amount of time.

Being social, or being private

With my 4 and a half years, I am currently the one having stayed the longest on my floor. The majority of the residents are Danish, spread out on all sorts of studies, with age and gender varying accordingly.

How much people tend to socialize varies from floor to floor, but in general, I have the impression that Scandis is among the less social dorms. A big part of this, I believe, is that the kitchenettes make use of the shared kitchen optional, with most tenants choosing to prepare most of their meals inside their personal sphere.

I still think though that this is one of the strengths of this dorm; here you have the possibility to isolate, or socialize, as much (or as little) as you prefer.

Parties and other social happenings

If you are among the more social outgoing residents, the best places to meet like-minded people would be in the kitchen, the garden, or possibly in Café Coma (at Hørhus Kollegium).

For example, a movie-night club was recently initiated, where all residents are invited to watch a movie together in one of the shared kitchens.

Also, the kitchens offer a nice area for casually socializing and hanging out with your neighbours, or even having friends over.

Free access to Hørhus dormitory’s bar

Personally, I am a proud member of an amazing Disney knitting-club (yeah, that’s right!) which once a month-ish gets together in ”my” kitchen to watch Disney movies, knit, and eat pizza.

The shared garden area and its barbeque facilities are frequently used in the spring and summer time, making it a great scene for getting to know people from the two neighbouring dorms as well.

Further, living at Scandis enables you to also use Hørhus´ facilities, like their music room, gym, tennis court, and weekly bar ‘Café Coma’.

Tour de chambre

In addition to the occasional spontaneous getting together for beers or coffee, a few annual party-traditions are sustained. The major one is the annual ‘Tour des Cuisines’, in which we compete between the kitchens for who can throw the best party.

Dorms disclosed

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.

Here is an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.

The theme is announced some time in advance, and depending on how soon your kitchen signs up, it will have a sponsored amount of money with which to decorate the kitchen, come up with an activity, and buy a drink for each attending resident.

During the event, each kitchen hosts a party for about 45 minutes for the rest of the dorm, and at the end, we vote for the best one. This is a fun and great way to meet you neighbours, resulting in it being the best attended event of the year.

Summer festival with neighbours

Although Scandis does not have its own a bar as such, we do have a party-room which tenants may rent for hosting private parties. This room also sets the scene for the dorm’s ”julefrokost” (Christmas-party).

Further, Hørhus hosts an annual summer-festival as well as a football-party in which kitchens compete against each other. Both take place in the shared garden, and again, Scandis residents are welcome to participate.

So to conclude: Scandis might not be among the biggest or best known dorms, but it is a very pleasant place to live. Due to a great collaboration with our neighbouring dorms, we have access to a variety of facilities and social happenings, but at the same time, Scandis also allows for a bit of isolation and privacy. No matter what your preferences are, at Scandis you can be yourself.

READ ABOUT OTHER RESIDENCE HALLS AND DORMS HERE: Student housing reviews: Dorms and residences in Copenhagen

At this dormitory, you can choose yourself how much social interaction you want to have.

[This guide has been continually updated since it was first published in 2014. There's »a bit of a soldiering vibe about it,« says Simon Stilling.

»Many people don't even understand that this is a residence hall. They think it's some kind of office building or factory,« Simon Stilling explains. The building is listed as protected due to its historical importance.

»It's not built the way you would normally build a student residence. But it has so much charm over it.«

Instead of soldiers, the building is now home to approximately 500 students in 463 rooms with training rooms, laundry facilities and its own cinema. You can hardly not be satisfied with the residence hall’s location just across from the National Gallery of Denmark.

»It is super-central. We want this diversity. We want to exploit the fact that there are a lot of people here with different nationalities as a positive.«

The residents also get to know each other in the large communal kitchens and at the monthly Friday bar. But BaseCamp Copenhagen is not a party dorm.

»Of course, we encourage people to go to parties and have fun. But this is not the only thing it is about,« says Simon Stilling. »You can easily have social activities that are not about alcohol.«

The dormitory also organises other activities for this reason, like yoga, bathing in the harbour and film nights. Located in Amager – a short ride southward from the central city – the area of is a mix of modern offices, artfully-designed residences and vast open spaces.

No two apartments are the same

In "Signal" – as residents affectionately refer to it – there are four residents per apartment. Each apartment has a kitchen, a small living room, two shared toilets and four individual bedrooms.

Although the units share the same skeleton, no two apartments ever look the same! What strikes you as you enter someone’s apartment is how differently it’s furnished from your own. From sofas to tables, posters to curtains – every apartment has its individual personality that you may soon grow to recognise as home.

In some way, each apartment ends up being a cumulative memory, as the common area inherits the decor and furniture of past tenants. Yet, it is perpetually reshaped by current residents and therein lies the uniqueness of each unit.

Good room mates are all about luck

Besides the interior, every apartment is also unique due to one crucial element– the people living in it. With its diverse mix of local and international students, chances are high that you’ll end up living next to someone from halfway across the world!

However, your roommates are not options you can pick and choose. It can be daunting that a factor as important as your apartment mates depends solely upon the luck of the draw. If you’re lucky, you could get a harmonious group dynamic that works like a well-oiled machine. Per contra, variations include unfortunate clashes in personalities but by and large, most maintain cordial relationships with their roommates.

Regardless of whether you like your roommates, living in a shared apartment certainly entails shared responsibility. The golden rule: Cleaneth up after thyself!

Needs more communal areas

As mentioned above, Signal houses a fairly large number of exchange/international students which imbues the atmosphere with a desire to socialise. Unfortunately, the general consensus is that the architecture of the building does not fully tap upon that potential, nor does it ideally facilitate it.

This is due to the lack of communal areas within the building itself. Apart from chance encounters in the laundry room and semi-awkward (just the tiniest bit too long) elevator rides up, it’s hard to meet new people in everyday life.

The only communal area is the common room located on the ground floor. It is rather well-equipped with a foosball table, a projector and screen, a disco ball (yeah!) and a full kitchen. However, it has to be booked in advance which makes it a little inconvenient for spontaneous sessions or meetings by chance.

A constant stream of social events and weekly parties

However, that doesn't mean to say social life is non-existent! Firstly, living with apartment mates already creates a good base level of social interaction. This would be less convenient in one-person single units, where many lament the loneliness of independent living. Humans are social creatures after all! Dining together or just sitting around a table, chatting at the end of a long day provides the much-emphasised feeling of hygge.

Furthermore, there are numerous social events in Signalhuset, publicised via the Facebook group. There are organised tour de chambres, barbecues, hygge sessions, potluck dinners, sports events and many more. These provide excellent opportunities to meet people from all corners of the world (or the block). If you make the effort to socialise, you’ll surely find the friends you’re looking for. And with that many international students, weekly parties are in no short supply!

Convenient public transport and free laundry

Many choose Signal because the metro (Ørestad station) is just a stone’s throw away, making everything highly-accessible. Not to mention, the airport is two S-train stops away which is a brownie point if you foresee a lot of travelling in your future.
By bike, you can reach KUA in 15-20 minutes via a straightforward route that is manageable even for the most directionally challenged.

If nothing above has piqued your interest, then this will surely entice you: free laundry! There are many washing machines and dryers available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (Disclaimer: Much to the dismay of other residents, the offer of free laundry only extends to exchange students.) Don’t scoff at the insignificance of free laundry – it’s a huge deal when living on a student budget in one of the most expensive cities in the world!

Amager offers more than you think!

Speaking of free things, there is a library conveniently located a five-minute walk away, where there are computers for free public use. Ørestad Bibliotek provides a conducive place to study when staying in is just too distracting.

Arguably, the largest draw of staying at Signal is its location directly opposite Fields, Scandinavia’s largest shopping mall. Fields is an integral and inescapable part of any Signal resident’s daily life. It houses an entire host of different shops and services, which makes it exceedingly convenient to get anything you require.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.

Bilka is a grocery megastore that sells quite possible everything you could ever need and more. The gym, Fitness DK, has a large two-level outlet that is open seven days a week. It possesses a youthful atmosphere, a colourful body of residents and enviable amenities. It also affords you the potential of sociability while maintaining your privacy.

Living abroad brings a multitude of new experiences, but as the days go by, you begin to recognise your little space as comforting and familiar. Despite being more than 10 years old now, its appearance is still impressive: a brown, circular six-story building organized into five blocks ordered with even numbers from 10 to 18, which are painted big and white outside each entrance.

SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen

All the dorm's kitchens and the common rooms face inwards, while the private rooms face outwards. The ground floor is dedicated to dorm facilities, namely the dorm's administration, a study room, a computer and printing room, a small but well-equipped gym, colorful laundry rooms, two music rooms, and a bike shop, plus some other rooms used for group work and workshops. Even if you stayed there 24/7, you wouldn’t be able to use them all.

Inside Tietgen's doors

Each block and each floor defines a group of residents sharing a kitchen (for example, 18.2 stands for block eighteen, second floor), and students strongly identify themselves with it.

Every kitchen and the common room located next to it is shared between students living in the same corridor. There are twelve rooms per corridor, all of them with a private bathroom and a big window. However, the room’s configuration differs in size and whether there’s a balcony or not. One room per corridor is destined for couples and is notably bigger in size, but it can also be rented by one student only. There are 30 kitchens and 360 rooms at Tietgen in total.

In addition to the kitchen and the common room, every corridor also has a refrigerator room where students can dry their clothes, keep extra kitchen utensils, and store food in freezers.

Location

The dorm is located on Amager, just next to Islands Brygge metro station and University of Copenhagen's KUA campus, and is mainly surrounded by university and residential buildings. It is also very close to DR Byen, the headquarters of the Danish national broadcasting corporation, where you will also find DR Concert Hall - an impressive cubic building completely lightened in blue at night.

Student reviews of residence halls

In the University Post Dorms Disclosed series, student residents write a review their own dorms and residence halls in English.

Here is an overview of all the Copenhagen residence halls, collegiums and dormitories.

There are at least three different supermarkets open until late in comfortable walking distance, many bike shops, and a small shopping center, as well as bakeries, restaurants and varied shops. Tietgen's location is the ideal balance between the city centre and its periphery. It takes 5-7 minutes to bike to the city center, and about as long to go the opposite way to the modern living area called Ørestad, where you'll find the Signalhuset dorm.

For students studying at North Campus or Danish Technical University (DTU), Tietgen's location is not favorable. It is also not the best place for those, who don't want to socialize in the common areas or get involved into party organization, decoration and cleaning.

Social environment and sports

Living at Tietgen will get you closer to the Danish culture. Since there's only two out of twelve rooms in each corridor reserved for exchange students, you'll mainly be living with Danes, learn their habits and try to speak their language (this doesn’t mean you won't have other nationalities in the ten remaining rooms, but it is highly unlikely).

This dorm is one of the few where your contact with Danes will be real! You’ll find that there are organized committees for everything. Students gather to do what they like the most: play football, do yoga, cook, plan parties or events, and even welcome foreign students (you'll sure be well-received by the exchange students committee).

For sure the best parties will take place at this dorm: Tour de Tietgen, Tour de Chambre, Tour de Cuisine, Pre-semester start party, Semester start party, Julefrokost... the list of good parties is endless. Despite the crazy drinking on weekend nights, you'll see most residents at the gym quite frequently or going for a run in Amager Fælled, as healthy and active lifestyle is very popular at Tietgen.

Pros and cons

The design of Tietgen works well. It is quite easy to see where's the fun and join it, as the interior of the circle contains big windows showing the activity of each kitchen. Also, the residents tend to be very friendly to new students, and it is easy to blend in (not so easy if you don't speak Danish at all).

The Facebook groups and the internal administration page is very active and on top of everything, which makes the communication of events, trades, parties and any kind of problems very simple and easy to participate in. However, the rooms here are expensive, especially for exchange students.

To appreciate Tiegten to the fullest, you should be outgoing and eager to make Danish friends, learn their culture and respect their habits. After all, you are just another exchange student who's moving into their kitchen from a period of six months to a year, while some of them have already been living there for more than three or four years. But be certain that if you are lucky enough to have your exchange there, you'll probably have Danish friends for life, participate in the best events, and learn more informal Danish expressions than your exchange student friends in other dorms.

If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk and mark it ‘Dorms Disclosed’

Review: Tietgenkollegiet revisited
Danes sure know how to party and Tietgenkollegiet is the best place for it, writes our student reviewer
["GET
