{"id":97032,"date":"2019-11-20T13:12:29","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T12:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/thomas-mandrup-poulsen-og-henrik-kragh-soerensen-vi-er-noedt-til-at-goere-op-med-den-kortsigtede-nyttetaenkning\/"},"modified":"2019-11-20T13:14:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T12:14:09","slug":"we-have-to-put-an-end-to-utilitarian-short-sightedness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/we-have-to-put-an-end-to-utilitarian-short-sightedness\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00bbWe have to put an end to utilitarian short-sightedness\u00ab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/forskerne-paa-det-sundhedsvidenskabelige-fakultet-vil-have-mere-indflydelse\/\">professors and assistant professors have created an association called APPA<\/a> with the stated purpose of gaining more influence on decision-making at the university.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the association is Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen, professor of immuno-endocrinology, and he is running for a seat on the board at The University of Copenhagen alongside Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen, professor mso of history and philosophy of science. Both are aiming to spread the ideas of APPA across the university.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5avqViaKXb\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/forskerne-paa-det-sundhedsvidenskabelige-fakultet-vil-have-mere-indflydelse\/\">Forskerne p\u00e5 Det Sundheds-videnskabelige Fakultet vil have mere indflydelse<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Forskerne p\u00e5 Det Sundheds-videnskabelige Fakultet vil have mere indflydelse&#8221; &#8212; Uniavisen\" src=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/forskerne-paa-det-sundhedsvidenskabelige-fakultet-vil-have-mere-indflydelse\/embed\/#?secret=RgujjfIsva#?secret=5avqViaKXb\" data-secret=\"5avqViaKXb\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbBesides the academic councils and the board there are no forums at the university, where researchers and educators can participate in the democratic process. That\u2019s why we want to work for more researcher and educator-influence on the board,\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen nods in agreement. He serves as deputy head of Department of Science Education where, according to him, there is a proud tradition of co-determination.<\/p>\n<p>That is why he feels adequately prepared to look beyond his own departmental needs and listen to his colleagues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019re not like the yellow vests, yelling and making a spectacle to be heard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00bbWe\u2019re not running for the board to serve our own interests. We\u2019re running because we believe that we can make a difference for all the staff at the university by listening to their needs.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen adds:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe\u2019re not like the yellow vests, yelling and making a spectacle to be heard. We believe that our credibility and years of experience will help us gain influence in an appropriate way\u00ab.<\/p>\n<h3>Researchers have been stripped of influence<\/h3>\n<p>Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen and Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen\u2019s party-list\u2014on which they appear as equal candidates\u2014is based on the key issue: \u2018More influence for VIP\u2019s!\u2019 (VIP being the term for researchers and educators).<\/p>\n<p>The two believe this issue is of vital importance, because it is important that the VIP\u2019s\u2014who are responsible for the university\u2019s core tasks of research, research-based teaching, scientific communication and consultancy\u2014are included in the decision-making process at The University of Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>The two researchers are critical of the 2003 University Act\u2014an act which among other things instated a majority of external members on university boards\u2014and in describing the vision for the future, they focus on giving the university act a \u00bbcheck-up\u00ab because it, in Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen\u2019s words, has been instrumental in \u00bbstripping researchers of their influence\u00ab.<\/p>\n<p>Until a majority of politicians are ready to reform the act, the two researchers will work towards gaining as much influence as possible on behalf of the VIP\u2019s within the current legal framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThis board serves the country\u2019s oldest institution of higher learning, and we need to put the competency of the VIP\u2019s to good use,\u00ab says Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, both students and administrative personnel need to be represented on the board as well as in the academic councils, according to Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read the policy platform of \u2018Mere VIP-influence!\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/morevipinfluencefolder.pdf\">her<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbHowever, the problem remains that there isn\u2019t a single forum in which the administration and VIP\u2019s can meet face-to-face; a forum where we can address our concerns without having to factor in the opinions of students and administrative personnel,\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe wish to be the voice that specifically represents VIP\u2019s with all our combined experience and knowledge in the boardroom,\u00ab adds Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen. \u00bbWe want the administration to recognize our values as well\u00ab.<\/p>\n<h3>No degree programme is redundant<\/h3>\n<p>Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen says that their shared philosophy recognizes the fact that all faculties, departments, and staff-members are an equal part of the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe worst thing that can happen is for the shared University of Copenhagen-identity to fracture. That would be demoralizing and problematic, so it\u2019s very important to preserve it,\u00ab he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s not about sending out e-mails with the same letterhead, or whether you use a green or a red logo. It\u2019s about the fact that we, as researchers, on the university board represent the entire VIP-community.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>The two researchers are highly critical of the shutdowns and consolidations among the minor degree programmes at Faculty of Humanities. Degree programmes that may not be profitable for the university in times of austerity but nevertheless, according to Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen and Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen, belong at the university.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0It\u2019s not more prestigious to have a degree in physics than a degree in assyriology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00bbDue to recent years\u2019 political decisions, a hierarchy has emerged among the degree programmes based on a financial and utilitarian short-sightedness. This is a mentality we have to dispense with, because it is a detriment to society as a whole. There is no such thing as a redundant degree programme. It\u2019s not more prestigious to have a degree in physics than a degree in assyriology\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen stresses that it is important that researchers and educators are allowed to do what they are good at without worrying about the private sector and the politicians pressuring the university to revise or shutdown degree programmes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbUtilitarian short-sightedness rarely benefits anyone. If we want to keep the university in the future, we can\u2019t shut down degree programmes simply because it makes financial sense in the short-term.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, the two researchers emphasize the work on the coming budget model, which is likely to redistribute funds from faculties that receive a lot of external funding to faculties that are struggling financially.<\/p>\n<p><em>Isn\u2019t there a very real danger that a budget model which redistributes funds from \u2018wealthy\u2019 faculties to \u2018poor\u2019 faculties might end up harming the aforementioned shared university-identity?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbYes, which is why it is important that we do so in the right way, so Humanities won\u2019t feel dependant on the charity of others, and the more well-funded faculties won\u2019t feel like they are pulling the entire load,\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, it is the two researchers\u2019 goal to convince the foundations to accept a so-called full cost-model. This means that foundations also cover extra expenses when issuing funding (e.g. administration, room costs, equipment, etc.) In that way, the university will not have any added expenses when accepting external funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThat way there\u2019s full transparency in terms of where the funds are going. That\u2019s why we want to work for more researcher and educator-influence on the board,\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen nods in agreement. He serves as deputy head of Department of Science Education where, according to him, there is a proud tradition of co-determination.<\/p>\n<p>That is why he feels adequately prepared to look beyond his own departmental needs and listen to his colleagues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We\u2019re not like the yellow vests, yelling and making a spectacle to be heard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00bbWe\u2019re not running for the board to serve our own interests. We\u2019re running because we believe that we can make a difference for all the staff at the university by listening to their needs.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen adds:<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe\u2019re not like the yellow vests, yelling and making a spectacle to be heard. We believe that our credibility and years of experience will help us gain influence in an appropriate way\u00ab.<\/p>\n<h3>Researchers have been stripped of influence<\/h3>\n<p>Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen and Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen\u2019s party-list\u2014on which they appear as equal candidates\u2014is based on the key issue: \u2018More influence for VIP\u2019s!\u2019 (VIP being the term for researchers and educators).<\/p>\n<p>The two believe this issue is of vital importance, because it is important that the VIP\u2019s\u2014who are responsible for the university\u2019s core tasks of research, research-based teaching, scientific communication and consultancy\u2014are included in the decision-making process at The University of Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>The two researchers are critical of the 2003 University Act\u2014an act which among other things instated a majority of external members on university boards\u2014and in describing the vision for the future, they focus on giving the university act a \u00bbcheck-up\u00ab because it, in Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen\u2019s words, has been instrumental in \u00bbstripping researchers of their influence\u00ab.<\/p>\n<p>Until a majority of politicians are ready to reform the act, the two researchers will work towards gaining as much influence as possible on behalf of the VIP\u2019s within the current legal framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThis board serves the country\u2019s oldest institution of higher learning, and we need to put the competency of the VIP\u2019s to good use,\u00ab says Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, both students and administrative personnel need to be represented on the board as well as in the academic councils, according to Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read the policy platform of \u2018Mere VIP-influence!\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/morevipinfluencefolder.pdf\">her<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbHowever, the problem remains that there isn\u2019t a single forum in which the administration and VIP\u2019s can meet face-to-face; a forum where we can address our concerns without having to factor in the opinions of students and administrative personnel,\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbWe wish to be the voice that specifically represents VIP\u2019s with all our combined experience and knowledge in the boardroom,\u00ab adds Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen. \u00bbWe want the administration to recognize our values as well\u00ab.<\/p>\n<h3>No degree programme is redundant<\/h3>\n<p>Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen says that their shared philosophy recognizes the fact that all faculties, departments, and staff-members are an equal part of the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThe worst thing that can happen is for the shared University of Copenhagen-identity to fracture. That would be demoralizing and problematic, so it\u2019s very important to preserve it,\u00ab he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbIt\u2019s not about sending out e-mails with the same letterhead, or whether you use a green or a red logo. It\u2019s about the fact that we, as researchers, on the university board represent the entire VIP-community.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>The two researchers are highly critical of the shutdowns and consolidations among the minor degree programmes at Faculty of Humanities. Degree programmes that may not be profitable for the university in times of austerity but nevertheless, according to Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen and Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen, belong at the university.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0It\u2019s not more prestigious to have a degree in physics than a degree in assyriology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00bbDue to recent years\u2019 political decisions, a hierarchy has emerged among the degree programmes based on a financial and utilitarian short-sightedness. This is a mentality we have to dispense with, because it is a detriment to society as a whole. There is no such thing as a redundant degree programme. It\u2019s not more prestigious to have a degree in physics than a degree in assyriology\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Henrik Kragh S\u00f8rensen stresses that it is important that researchers and educators are allowed to do what they are good at without worrying about the private sector and the politicians pressuring the university to revise or shutdown degree programmes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbUtilitarian short-sightedness rarely benefits anyone. If we want to keep the university in the future, we can\u2019t shut down degree programmes simply because it makes financial sense in the short-term.\u00ab<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, the two researchers emphasize the work on the coming budget model, which is likely to redistribute funds from faculties that receive a lot of external funding to faculties that are struggling financially.<\/p>\n<p><em>Isn\u2019t there a very real danger that a budget model which redistributes funds from \u2018wealthy\u2019 faculties to \u2018poor\u2019 faculties might end up harming the aforementioned shared university-identity?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00bbYes, which is why it is important that we do so in the right way, so Humanities won\u2019t feel dependant on the charity of others, and the more well-funded faculties won\u2019t feel like they are pulling the entire load,\u00ab says Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, it is the two researchers\u2019 goal to convince the foundations to accept a so-called full cost-model. This means that foundations also cover extra expenses when issuing funding (e.g. administration, room costs, equipment, etc.) In that way, the university will not have any added expenses when accepting external funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bbThat way there\u2019s full transparency in terms of where the funds are going.
