Whenever I have friends or family over who haven\u2019t visited me before, I tell them to look for the huge orange and gray box right next to KUA. I might also have used the word \u2018ugly\u2019 as a descriptive \u2013 and there is no doubt that the exterior of Bikuben Kollegiet (the ‘Beehive’) is unusual. Sitting between the old 19th century blocks of Amagerbro and the sandy-coloured university complex, Bikuben Kollegiet definitely stands out.<\/p>\n

Brown, orange and concrete<\/h2>\n

The building was completed in 2006 which means that the dorm offers all the amenities a student can hope for. There is a fitness room, party hall, lounge, study room and several outdoor terraces. The topmost terrace is on the sixth floor and offers a great view over Copenhagen and Amager \u2013 perfect for New Year\u2019s Eve parties and summer night barbeques.<\/p>\n

There are six floors, and each is a little different. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building\u2019s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.<\/p>\n

The design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970’s colors to match the dorm’s expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and \u2013 as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate \u2013 there are dishwashers!<\/p>\n

Halloween, Christmas and social life<\/h2>\n

Like the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.<\/p>\n

If you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben\u2019s many committees. My recommendation would be the Party Committee as they get together regularly to organize Bikuben\u2019s parties.<\/p>\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

Last semester Bikuben had two official parties: The Halloween Party and the Christmas Lunch. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.<\/p>\n

Life on the 4th floor<\/h2>\n

My floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you\u2019ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call “Red Wine Friday”, which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.<\/p>\n

Each Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.<\/p>\n

A modern home<\/h2>\n

While the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. While the old Copenhagen apartments are charming, you can\u2019t help but appreciate the fact that an elevator takes you to your floor, that a dishwasher is right at hand or that the building is isolated so well that you hardly ever hear your neighbours.<\/p>\n

And in the dark winter evenings when you see, not the orange and the gray colors, but the welcoming irregular squares of light shining from the box, Bikuben is an especially nice place to call home.<\/p>\n

may call Bikuben Kollegiet ugly, but underneath the 70s-style colour palette you find ultra modern facilities and in the summer there are rooftop tell them to look for the huge orange and gray box right next to KUA. I might also have used the word \u2018ugly\u2019 as a descriptive \u2013 and there is no doubt that the exterior of Bikuben Kollegiet (the ‘Beehive’) is unusual. Sitting between the old 19th century blocks of Amagerbro and the sandy-coloured university complex, Bikuben Kollegiet definitely stands out.<\/p>\n<p>The University Post has reviewed the Bikuben dorm a second time. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-bikuben-the-quirky-beehive\/\">the later review here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Brown, orange and concrete<\/h2>\n<p>The building was completed in 2006 which means that the dorm offers all the amenities a student can hope for. There is a fitness room, party hall, lounge, study room and several outdoor terraces. The topmost terrace is on the sixth floor and offers a great view over Copenhagen and Amager \u2013 perfect for New Year\u2019s Eve parties and summer night barbeques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are six floors, and each is a little different. However the student rooms are much the same. Each person gets a bathroom and a kitchenette, and the room itself is spacious and white. Concrete is an integral part of the building\u2019s design which means that the ceilings in the rooms are made of this material, and that most rooms have a wall which is partly made of concrete.<\/p>\n<p>The design of the common areas is dominated by browns and oranges. This design decision is often frowned upon by the inhabitants who find it a bit odd that anybody would choose these 1970’s colors to match the dorm’s expensive and modern furniture. Thankfully, the common kitchens are a neutral white, and \u2013 as anybody who has ever lived in an old Copenhagen apartment will be able to appreciate \u2013 there are dishwashers!<\/p>\n<h2>Halloween, Christmas and social life<\/h2>\n<p>Like the architecture, the social life on each floor is different. The most accurate description would be that it is what you make of it. Bikuben Kollegiet has its private Facebook group where people often post if they are having a kitchen party or if they are showing a movie in the lounge. Usually everybody is invited, and it is always a pleasure when a new face shows up.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a social dorm life it is a great idea to join one of Bikuben\u2019s many committees. My recommendation would be the Party Committee as they get together regularly to organize Bikuben\u2019s parties.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last semester Bikuben had two official parties: The Halloween Party and the Christmas Lunch. Both were preceded by pre-parties: The Pumpkin Party where we carved pumpkins for Halloween decorations, and the Christmas Decoration party where the Baking Committee served cakes and everybody folded Christmas hearts and Christmas stars.<\/p>\n<h2>Life on the 4th floor<\/h2>\n<p>My floor is one of the most social in the dorm. Most of the time you\u2019ll find people hanging out in the kitchens and the common rooms, and we regularly organize events as well as consume a lot of boxed wine. This means that we have what we call “Red Wine Friday”, which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we celebrate Red Wine Friday three times a week. On our floor, most days of the week are connected with a particular kind of alcohol: Cocktail Monday, Tequila Tuesday, Vodka Saturday and so on. We did however deem it necessary to develop Abstinence Wednesday too.<\/p>\n<p>Each Monday we have the official dinner club where the residents of the fourth floor cook for each other. Often many impromptu dinners happen too as a lot of the residents like to cook and make use of the opportunity to get many people together in order to be able to afford an excellent dinner on a student budget.<\/p>\n<h2>A modern home<\/h2>\n<p>While the beauty of Bikuben Kollegiet can be discussed, there is no doubt that it is a great luxury to live in a modern building. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. According to one of our reviewers it is something for both geeks and partygoers.\r\n\r\nThe rent may be high but it includes all your meals. In this dormitory you can get a 15-20 m2 room in a large mansion in \u00d8sterbro that you will share with 60 other residents. Common facilities are many: a large dining hall, TV-room and a study hall overlooking \u00d8resund. The rooms vary from 14-18 m2 and each comes with a private bathroom. Each floor has a common kitchen and much of the social life centers around them as well as the roof terrace. Although they are not free, the dorm also has laundry facilities. History is tangible here, although the requirement of being related to the Danish resistance has been relaxed of late.\r\n\r\nLike a set of nesting dolls, the 4. Maj Kollegiet (see above) has another dormitory within it, namely the tiny Hassagers Kollegium, which is home to only 10 students.\r\n\r\nRead the review of\u00a0 the twin residence halls 4. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium \u2014 dorms within a dorm<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h2>Inner city<\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>Regensen<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nRegensen dates back to 1623, and about 100 students share a large, old and very beautiful building just next to Rundet\u00e5rn. Rooms vary greatly in size, from 11-25 m2, but the price remains a staggeringly low. Other than a room, you gain access to a great number of common spaces and activities: from a large ballroom to a library and study hall. The dorm has garden days, mushroom-picking trips, and a strong sense of community spirit. But the price does not reflect quality, and this dormitory is actually an old house with a beautiful garden in the heart of city center. It is all very orderly. As one resident put it: \u00bb... everyone comes from a wealthy background ... The worst I think people do is ride their bikes through red lights, if they are feeling a bit crazy\u00ab.\r\n\r\nRead the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-borchs-a-well-behaved-dorm-for-well-to-do-students\/\">Review: Borchs \u2014 a well behaved dorm for well-to-do students<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h3>Elers' Kollegium<\/h3>\r\n<em>Elers' Kollegium<\/em> is only for the very few. Not anyone can apply for this residence hall, which only has 20 places with several of them are earmarked for specific study programmes. But the location dorm, in old barracks, is as central in Copenhagen as it can possibly be.\r\n\r\n\u00bbThere is not even a waiting list. It is closely connected to Danish thinker Grundtvig who was pastor in Vartov church until his death in 1872. In the beginning, only theologians lived here. 'South House' is a new student housing building in Valby near the Copenhagen Zoo. It opened its doors to the first tenants in October 2015. Unlike a dorm or collective variety of student housing, South House offers private apartments. As a result of this (and likely the city's current student housing crisis) apartments at South House are more expensive than many other student housing options. However, if you treasure your privacy and want a \u201creal apartment\u201d of your own, South House may be for you.\r\n\r\nSouth House is technically located in Valby, but it actually sits on the border of Frederiksberg and Valby, near the Copenhagen Zoo. It is also within close striking distance to Vesterbro by bicycle. S\u00f8ndermarken, and Valby station are also just a short walk away. South House is situated on one of the main roads going through Valby and Frederiksberg, S\u00f8ndre Fasanvej (known as Nordre Fasanvej in Frederiksberg). Some select units include unique large terraces, perfect for setting up a garden or a large outdoor patio area. In addition to that a handful of units also offer private balconies. One community room is located on each floor which also includes a full size oven (apartments have kitchenettes only).\r\n<div class=\"dme-external-teaser dme-external-teaser-3\">\r\n<div class=\"image\">\r\n<div class=\"dme-image dme-image-center dme-image-preset-0\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/universitetsavisen.dk\/node\/24420\"><img title=\"\" src=\"\/old_files\/frankrigsgade2_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>On the 1st floor of the building are doctors' offices, and the ground floor consists of a \u201cLidl\u201d supermarket, perfect for the lazy student who can take a quick elevator ride down to the market when a case of the munchies sets in. The basement includes secure storage units for each apartment, bicycle parking, and laundry facilities. The building is wired with both cable and fiber internet. Students are also in the process of creating a group internet coop at the time of writing.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Special considerations<\/h2>\r\nAlthough the prices at South House are higher than most student housing (DKK 6600\u2013 9719) most students should qualify for \u201cBoligst\u00f8tte\u201d (housing support). In the case of this reviewer, I receive about DKK 1000 per month off my listed rent via 'Boligst\u00f8tte' . This is due to the fact that it is not shared accommodation and each unit has its own private kitchen and bathroom. Boligst\u00f8tte makes the monthly rent a lot more affordable, especially if you are cohabiting with a partner.\r\n\r\nAnother special consideration is at the time this review was written, South House is still a very new housing project undergoing major construction and remodeling. Although tenants are allowed to live here during this time, construction noise and construction workers are still active from approximately 7 am-7 pm. In addition to this some tenants have reported maintenance issues such as water being shut off, leaking, heating problems, ventilation issues, internet problems, and various other issues.\r\n\r\nThese faults are being dealt with individually during the construction process and will hopefully be resolved for future tenants. Furthermore, garbage collection, laundry facilities, storage units, internet, and bicycle parking, have only just became available this week. Its nice having your own private apartment, but still having the student atmosphere as a subtle backdrop without the overwhelming obnoxious overtones of a dorm or shared housing coop . Its also nice qualifying for 'Boligst\u00f8tte' (housing support) as a result of this amenity. The building has nice features, grocery shopping is easy since you live above a store, and the location is very good for Valby.\r\n\r\nThe biggest drawback for South House is of course the monthly rent, which for student housing is on the higher end of price spectrum.\r\n\r\nThe constant daily construction work on the building is also a drawback, but this should (hopefully) not be a problem for future tenants. Other drawbacks include maintenance issues which also hopefully will not be a problem for future tenants.\r\n\r\nDespite the benefit of extra privacy that South House provides, there is also a con to this by stripping away a certain lack of community. Regardless of these drawbacks, the city of Copenhagen has a serious student housing crisis. And South House contributes to alleviating a small piece of this for those who can afford it. I am happy to live here despite some of the drawbacks. There are also a number of active committees that you can take part in to make your mark on the dormitory and to meet the other residents.\r\n\r\nOne of the committees is 'the green bees', which is responsible for finding new ways to make the dorm as sustainable as possible using all kinds of different methods.
