At the corner of Classensgade and Strandboulevarden on a Parisian-looking avenue with a plane of trees down the center of the street lies my favorite spot in all of Copenhagen: Nordisk Kollegium.<\/p>\n

Nordisk Kollegium is the student housing of 130 residents from different universities in the Copenhagen area: University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Business School, DTU, RUC and more. Common for all of us is that we call ourselves alumni of Nordisk Kollegium – and I should add; that we like to see ourselves as an exceptionally gifted and good-looking crowd.<\/p>\n

Contrary to the quiet streets of \u00d8sterbro, NOKO (as it is usually referred to among its alumni) is characterized by a vibrant student life. When the city lies dormant and deserted outside our windows, the hallways, kitchens, and common rooms of the dormitory are always alive with people laughing, studying, relaxing or in the middle of an intense board game match.<\/p>\n

“Dinner is served!”<\/h2>\n

I may as well begin by answering one of the most common questions I get when telling people \u2018on the outside\u2019 that I live at Nordisk Kollegium: \u201cIs it true that the meals are prepared for you?\u201d<\/p>\n

And yes, it is true. Two times a day food is served in the dining hall, which \u2013 almost symbolically, connects the north and south wing of the dormitory. The dining hall serves as a meeting place for all 130 students, when they come to enjoy their breakfast or dinner.<\/p>\n

Eating breakfast together is a perfect opportunity for morning chitchat. And sharing a pot of coffee or doing the quiz on the back of the newspaper is a great way of getting to know your neighbors a little bit better.<\/p>\n

Exceptionally easy to meet people<\/h2>\n

At dinnertime we usually sit with our closest neighbors: the people from our hallway. Each hallway houses between 4 and 15 people who share a kitchen.<\/p>\n

The fact that the meals are served at certain times and shared in the dining hall creates a structure and an atmosphere comparable to a Danish \u2018h\u00f8jskole\u2019 or perhaps similar to boarding schools. In my opinion, it is a big part of what makes NOKO special \u2013 it makes it exceptionally easy to meet others, which contributes greatly to the social life.<\/p>\n

It also makes it temptingly easy to never actually leave the dormitory. Besides the dining hall, the facilities at NOKO also include a fitness room, a laundry room, a hearth room, a billiards room, a library, and a courtyard \u2013 practically everything a student would need.<\/p>\n

The NOKO-types (and where they can be found)<\/h2>\n

Nordisk Kollegium is home to many different types of people. One type who seems relatively well-represented here is the sports enthusiast: the type who can be seen everyday walking eagerly across the courtyard to the fitness room in their sportswear, or representing NOKO in a game of soccer against another team in the \u2018dormitory-league\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n

There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n

Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n

In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n

Another type is the board game player. He or she will use every occasion to suggest a game of Settlers and can on Sundays be found practically locked in the library fighting for dominion over fictional kingdoms in a up to 7-hour long game of the Game of Thrones-board game (yes, that is a true and reoccurring situation).<\/p>\n

Of course Nordisk Kollegium is also the home of a whole lot of serious, hardworking students who spend their days diligently studying, and who may be found in the dining hall, which turns into a study hall between the meals.<\/p>\n

Party like there ain’t no tomorrow<\/h2>\n

Another thing we have in common at NOKO is that we appreciate a good party. When it is not exam periods (and even sometimes when it is), the alumni at NOKO love to party.<\/p>\n

Dating back to 1942, the dormitory has many party traditions, both old and new, that the current alumni strive to keep alive. Some of the bigger, more formal parties include the gala in the fall and the spring ball. Another festive tradition is the yearly trip on \u2018Store Bededag\u2019 to Kastellet with our neighbors and \u2018frenemies\u2019 from G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium.<\/p>\n

The rivalry (which doesn\u2019t seem to be based upon anything real) is taken to the most straightforward of fights on this occasion: a tug-of-war. We later join in a party for both dormitories, which usually results in various pranks and thefts \u2013 though always in a friendly spirit.<\/p>\n

If I were you\u2026<\/h2>\n

Smaller events will often do for creating a festive mood at Nordisk Kollegium as well: a study session doesn\u2019t have to be boring when you live at NOKO, a slow Saturday can easily be turned into a party, and a hallway kitchen can be transformed into a sweaty dance floor in seconds.<\/p>\n

I honestly miss NOKO when I\u2019ve been away even just for a few days. I miss my room with the high ceilings, the French balcony, and the muffled noises from my next-door neighbors, or the people passing by in the hallway. And I miss my daily routines, with breakfast and newspaper-quizzes, board games, beers, and collective study sessions.<\/p>\n

Most importantly though, I miss the people I live with, who somehow manage to turn even the busiest, most boring days into a party at Nordisk Kollegium. And now that I\u2019ve gotten into this party, I don\u2019t plan on leaving it any time soon.<\/p>\n

So if I were you, I\u2019d hurry up and write an application and try to get a ticket into this party that is \u2018kollegie-livet\u2019.<\/p>\n

plane of trees down the center of the street lies my favorite spot in all of Copenhagen: Nordisk Kollegium.<\/p>\n<p>Nordisk Kollegium is the student housing of 130 residents from different universities in the Copenhagen area: University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Business School, DTU, RUC and more. Common for all of us is that we call ourselves alumni of Nordisk Kollegium – and I should add; that we like to see ourselves as an exceptionally gifted and good-looking crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the quiet streets of \u00d8sterbro, NOKO (as it is usually referred to among its alumni) is characterized by a vibrant student life. When the city lies dormant and deserted outside our windows, the hallways, kitchens, and common rooms of the dormitory are always alive with people laughing, studying, relaxing or in the middle of an intense board game match.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE THE FULL ‘DORMS DISCLOSED’ UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>“Dinner is served!”<\/h2>\n<p>I may as well begin by answering one of the most common questions I get when telling people \u2018on the outside\u2019 that I live at Nordisk Kollegium: \u201cIs it true that the meals are prepared for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yes, it is true. Two times a day food is served in the dining hall, which \u2013 almost symbolically, connects the north and south wing of the dormitory. The dining hall serves as a meeting place for all 130 students, when they come to enjoy their breakfast or dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Eating breakfast together is a perfect opportunity for morning chitchat. And sharing a pot of coffee or doing the quiz on the back of the newspaper is a great way of getting to know your neighbors a little bit better.<\/p>\n<h2>Exceptionally easy to meet people<\/h2>\n<p>At dinnertime we usually sit with our closest neighbors: the people from our hallway. Each hallway houses between 4 and 15 people who share a kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the meals are served at certain times and shared in the dining hall creates a structure and an atmosphere comparable to a Danish \u2018h\u00f8jskole\u2019 or perhaps similar to boarding schools. In my opinion, it is a big part of what makes NOKO special \u2013 it makes it exceptionally easy to meet others, which contributes greatly to the social life.<\/p>\n<p>It also makes it temptingly easy to never actually leave the dormitory. Besides the dining hall, the facilities at NOKO also include a fitness room, a laundry room, a hearth room, a billiards room, a library, and a courtyard \u2013 practically everything a student would need.<\/p>\n<h2>The NOKO-types (and where they can be found)<\/h2>\n<p>Nordisk Kollegium is home to many different types of people. One type who seems relatively well-represented here is the sports enthusiast: the type who can be seen everyday walking eagerly across the courtyard to the fitness room in their sportswear, or representing NOKO in a game of soccer against another team in the \u2018dormitory-league\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\">\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.<\/p>\n<p>Some are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.<\/p>\n<p>In the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with ‘Dorms Disclosed’ in the subject header.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another type is the board game player. He or she will use every occasion to suggest a game of Settlers and can on Sundays be found practically locked in the library fighting for dominion over fictional kingdoms in a up to 7-hour long game of the Game of Thrones-board game (yes, that is a true and reoccurring situation).<\/p>\n<p>Of course Nordisk Kollegium is also the home of a whole lot of serious, hardworking students who spend their days diligently studying, and who may be found in the dining hall, which turns into a study hall between the meals.<\/p>\n<h2>Party like there ain’t no tomorrow<\/h2>\n<p>Another thing we have in common at NOKO is that we appreciate a good party. When it is not exam periods (and even sometimes when it is), the alumni at NOKO love to party.<\/p>\n<p>Dating back to 1942, the dormitory has many party traditions, both old and new, that the current alumni strive to keep alive. Some of the bigger, more formal parties include the gala in the fall and the spring ball. Another festive tradition is the yearly trip on \u2018Store Bededag\u2019 to Kastellet with our neighbors and \u2018frenemies\u2019 from G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium.<\/p>\n<p>The rivalry (which doesn\u2019t seem to be based upon anything real) is taken to the most straightforward of fights on this occasion: a tug-of-war. We later join in a party for both dormitories, which usually results in various pranks and thefts \u2013 though always in a friendly spirit.<\/p>\n<h2>If I were you\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Smaller events will often do for creating a festive mood at Nordisk Kollegium as well: a study session doesn\u2019t have to be boring when you live at NOKO, a slow Saturday can easily be turned into a party, and a hallway kitchen can be transformed into a sweaty dance floor in seconds.<\/p>\n<p>I honestly miss NOKO when I\u2019ve been away even just for a few days. I miss my room with the high ceilings, the French balcony, and the muffled noises from my next-door neighbors, or the people passing by in the hallway. And I miss my daily routines, with breakfast and newspaper-quizzes, board games, beers, and collective study sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly though, I miss the people I live with, who somehow manage to turn even the busiest, most boring days into a party at Nordisk Kollegium. The rooms are between 14.6-56 m2 and have private bathrooms. The kitchen is shared. The dorm has a very modern interior and has purposely kept an antique exterior, which creates a fascinating contrast. The vibe is very international as 40 % of the students are from abroad. It is also a very social environment and is known for its common Sunday dinners and themed Friday bar nights. According to one of our reviewers it is something for both geeks and partygoers.\r\n\r\nThe rent may be high but it includes all your meals. In this dormitory you can get a 15-20 m2 room in a large mansion in \u00d8sterbro that you will share with 60 other residents. Common facilities are many: a large dining hall, TV-room and a study hall overlooking \u00d8resund. The rooms vary from 14-18 m2 and each comes with a private bathroom. Each floor has a common kitchen and much of the social life centers around them as well as the roof terrace. Although they are not free, the dorm also has laundry facilities. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium<\/h3>\r\nThe \u20184th May dorm\u2019 was founded almost 70 years ago to house the descendants of Danish World War Two resistance members. History is tangible here, although the requirement of being related to the Danish resistance has been relaxed of late.\r\n\r\nLike a set of nesting dolls, the 4. Maj Kollegiet (see above) has another dormitory within it, namely the tiny Hassagers Kollegium, which is home to only 10 students.\r\n\r\nRead the review of\u00a0 the twin residence halls 4. Maj Kollegiet and Hassagers Kollegium \u2014 dorms within a dorm<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h2>Inner city<\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>Regensen<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nRegensen dates back to 1623, and about 100 students share a large, old and very beautiful building just next to Rundet\u00e5rn. Rooms vary greatly in size, from 11-25 m2, but the price remains a staggeringly low. Other than a room, you gain access to a great number of common spaces and activities: from a large ballroom to a library and study hall. The dorm has garden days, mushroom-picking trips, and a strong sense of community spirit. But the price does not reflect quality, and this dormitory is actually an old house with a beautiful garden in the heart of city center. It is all very orderly. As one resident put it: \u00bb... everyone comes from a wealthy background ... The worst I think people do is ride their bikes through red lights, if they are feeling a bit crazy\u00ab.\r\n\r\nRead the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/dorms-disclosed-borchs-a-well-behaved-dorm-for-well-to-do-students\/\">Review: Borchs \u2014 a well behaved dorm for well-to-do students<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h3>Elers' Kollegium<\/h3>\r\n<em>Elers' Kollegium<\/em> is only for the very few. Not anyone can apply for this residence hall, which only has 20 places with several of them are earmarked for specific study programmes. But the location dorm, in old barracks, is as central in Copenhagen as it can possibly be.\r\n\r\n\u00bbThere is not even a waiting list. This is one of the most unique dormitories in Denmark, in the middle of a forest and close to a lake. The houses are built of logs and the residents each have 10m2 with shared kitchens and bathrooms. One of the hardest words for an international student to learn and awkwardly pronounce when a new Danish friend asks, \u201cSo, where do you live?\u201d\r\n\r\nWhen moving to Denmark for my Master\u2019s, I had already experienced \u201cresidence life\u201d in my first year of university back at home in Canada. So naturally, I was intrigued to see the similarities and differences in residence life in Copenhagen, Denmark.\r\n\r\nAnd first off I can say, it is not referred to as residence life here in Denmark,\r\nit is 'kollegium' life.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong>\r\n<h2>Ikea on request<\/h2>\r\nMy one year and eight months of living in HVK has been divided between two rooms; a so-called international room and a Danish room. The difference? Absolutely nothing.\r\n\r\nEach room is a Scandinavian-ly, white-walled, 10 square meter room equipped with an entrance way that includes a built in wardrobe and sink area. All international rooms are Ikea furnished (bed, desk, bookshelf, night table, lamp), however in the Danish rooms, furnishing is available upon request, which is the route I chose to take.\r\n\r\nThe rooms are small and cozy but still with enough space to dance like nobody is watching or house a visitor or two from back home. And hey, if you want to learn a new language or discover new music, you can simply open your window and take in all the sounds from the surrounding rooms. Once the windows are open, privacy is lost.\r\n<h2>Sharing is nice<\/h2>\r\nEach floor consists of 22 rooms, 2 kitchens, and 2 bathroom areas (3 showers and 3 toilets in total). Coming from a family of four girls, sharing kitchens and bathrooms hasn't been much of a problem to me.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\r\nThere are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.\r\n\r\nSome are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.\r\n\r\nIn the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.\r\n\r\nHere is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.\r\n\r\nIf you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nWe have the luxury of a cleaning lady who keeps the bathrooms nice and tidy. But for the kitchens, we have to get down and dirty as the neatness of the kitchens are the floor's own responsibility.\r\n\r\nAs for other common areas, the basement is one big common area, divided into 5 rooms that contain things such as a 52 inch TV, couches, ping-pong table, football, pool table, workout equipment, and <em>most<\/em> importantly, a party room with a bar. This space all opens up to a medium-sized yard where you can relax and enjoy the sun (when it makes an appearance!) on the grass or picnic tables, or you can enjoy a BBQ with your floor-mates.\r\n<h2>Far from the city<\/h2>\r\nHVK is tucked away in Copenhagen NW just next to the A-line station stop, Emdrup station. The surrounding area is mainly residential housing with a few small supermarkets and a Fitness World within walking distance.\r\n\r\nAlso just up the road, there is a pond with a path, perfect for evening runs or romantic walks. With only a 5.5 km bike ride to N\u00f8rreport station, being a part of city life is accessible, but at times it can feel a bit removed. However, for those going to school at University of Copenhagen\u2019s North Campus (like myself), a 7 minute bike ride down one road makes it quick and easy to get to early morning lectures.\r\n<h2>Family time<\/h2>\r\nOne of the best things about living at HVK is the \u201cfamily-like\u201d atmosphere. Being in student housing of a smaller size (100 residents) and sharing everything but sheets, the social scene at HVK is very 'hyggelig'.\r\n\r\nEach floor is a mini-family, filled with meal clubs, movie nights, kitchen parties and growing friendships. When the whole building gets together for different activities (always including drinking of course \u2013 even at the General Assembly) it is like having a big family reunion.\r\n\r\nThere is a lot of tradition in the building and as Danish culture goes, it is of course found in local party rituals. And what are they like? In one word: Drunk. For some reason, parties here are never without a theme. Personally, I love it! It makes things that much more enjoyable to watch guys prance around in dresses, or a male burlesque dancer spanking a dominatrix.\r\n<h2>Party time<\/h2>\r\nWhen living at HVK, I have had the opportunity to take part in many different parties including Tour de Cuisine, Tour de Mose, Half-Year parties, Thursday cafes and last but not least, the 36 hour bar, where the floor that drinks the most amount of beer wins a trophy. There is much more than drinking cheaply priced beers (3 for 20kr!!), this is when the spirit of 'kollegium' is most alive.\r\n\r\nAt some parties, dinner is cooked by one of the floors and served to the whole residence hall and at others, there is healthy competition between the floors with a soccer tournament (football for you Europeans) and of course, drinking games.\r\n<h2>The people<\/h2>\r\nMeeting people in the building is fairly easy, once again, because everything is shared. However, a bit of 'outgoing-ness' can go a long way. It is a fairly even mix of guys and girls, but the international-to-Danish ratio is a bit skewed at 25 pct. international to 75 pct. Danish. For internationals, this is a very nice way to experience Danish culture when moving to a new country. However, in the beginning, it can feel a bit intimidating when breaking into the floor.\r\n\r\nThe people living here range from 18 to 27, studying things from Educational Sciences to English Literature. Those living in Danish rooms can live here as long as they want to as long as they are studying. For those in international rooms, it is only allowed to live here for a year. However, depending on how involved you are in the building, it is possible to later end up in a Danish room, just as I have.\r\n\r\nAll-in-all, I have loved my time here at HVK. The dormitory currently houses 20 students of University of Copenhagen - all young, gifted, and handsome folk, who call themselves alumni of Borchs collegium.\r\n<h2>Century old frenemies<\/h2>\r\nFounded in 1691 by the multifaceted professor in philology, medicine and botany, Ole Borch, the dormitory has many traditions, some dating hundreds of years back.\r\n\r\nThese include celebrating the first snow with rum toddy in the garden and also the founder's birthday culminating in a splendid feast with abundances of port wine.\r\n\r\n<strong>SEE THE FULL 'DORMS DISCLOSED' UNIVERSITY POST SERIES: <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">Reviews by student residents of dorms and residence halls in Copenhagen<\/a><\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe dormitory shares strong bonds with some of the other old dormitories in the city centre - the prominent Valkendorf, Vartov, Ehlers, and Regensen, the latter being the biggest and most famous of them, and therefore also subject to a fundamental hatred from all the others. The rivalry also exists between the other small dormitories, resulting in pranks, vandalism, and theft - though always in a friendly tone.\r\n<h2>Step into Hogwarts<\/h2>\r\nThe student rooms differ in size, though not in price. Some have one big room. Others have two rooms, and the lucky few have two rooms and a mezzanine, literally making it a small apartment for the sheer price of 1.400 kroner. Incredible? Yes. Furnished? No.\r\n\r\nThe building itself stretches over five levels, three of them inhabited by humans. The ground floor holds five students sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. In addition to that, the library is also found here. Boasting hundreds of dusty books, some dating back before the 19th century, and a grand piano, it is quite the sight - and rather intimidating to newcomers.\r\n\r\nBut never judge a book by its cover. The first floor houses 7 people and the second 8, each floor sharing one kitchen, shower, and toilet. From the rooms facing the street, we can spy on drunken people in the street who are visiting 'Den Glade Gris' - the happy pig, in English - a place that truly lives up to its name. The alumni lucky enough to have a room facing the garden can enjoy the night's silence and the sight of other alumni studying\/sunbathing in the summer. Quite the sight, at times.\r\n<h2>To eat, to chat or to dance, that is the question<\/h2>\r\nIf you're not in the mood to cook, different food clubs will make you dinner several times a week at a cheap price. All in all, there is plenty of opportunities to eat together or just socialize around something else in the house.\r\n\r\nBesides all of this, we have a cellar where the (free) washing machine is found. Other things worth mentioning down there, is the storage rooms, the workshop, and the wine cellar(!) where residents can find agents to help them pursuing all sorts of different objectives - getting clean clothes, fixing a bike (getting dirty clothes), or starting a party.\r\n<div class=\"factbox\">\r\n<p class=\"factbox-header feature-color\">Dorms disclosed<\/p>\r\nThere are loads of dormitories, kollegiums, and student residences in Copenhagen, yet most of the information available is in Danish.\r\n\r\nSome are small, old houses with pretty gardens, others are giant concrete buildings with tiny windows.\r\n\r\nIn the Dorms Disclosed series, it is the residents themselves that review the dorms that they live in.\r\n\r\nHere is <a href=\"https:\/\/uniavisen.dk\/en\/student-housing-reviews-dorms-and-residences-in-copenhagen\/\">an overview with links to all of the dormitory and student accommodation reviews<\/a> we have published so far, written by the people who know them the best.\r\n\r\nIf you want to write an English-language review of your dorm write to uni-avis@adm.ku.dk with 'Dorms Disclosed' in the subject header.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\nSpeaking of parties, we also enjoy the luxury of our very own ballroom, found on the top floor. Big parties and sometimes lectures are held here, and when it is vacant we often take pleasure in a game of table tennis in the light of the glorious disco ball. In the other end of the top floor is the TV room. Alumni do not seem to find any excuse small enough to spend an hour or three in its big, soft couches, watching a movie whilst at times waiting for their hangovers to lift.\r\n<h2>Getting in<\/h2>\r\nThe alumni presently residing are responsible for running the dormitory on a daily basis. That includes garden work-days twice a year and other interchanging duties once every few months. Really, it isn't that hard and it helps establish a sense of ownership over the place, as well as shaping you up for eventually taking care of your own life, which some need more than others.\r\n\r\nAs for the alumni, they are a mix of students from the Humanities, Theology, and Science faculties. This is due to the constitution, which only allows students from mentioned faculties to move in. Also, you have to have finished at least two years of study before you can apply.\r\n\r\nDespite that fact, we still boast a rather diverse crowd of people between 23 and 29 - only Danes at the moment - with an even gender distribution. This is entirely because we choose who moves in. Or, that is, two selected alumni read all applications every time a room is up for grabs, call some in for a talk and then pick whoever they feel fits in the best. Pure luxury.\r\n<h2>Keep an eye on KU-net<\/h2>\r\nThe location makes it easy to satisfy any need a struggling student might have. Supermarkets, clothing shops, cafes, bars, and parks are just a few of the many offers within a five-minute bike radius. Especially worth mentioning is Paludan Bogcaf\u00e9, a 30-second walk around the corner and an excellent place to study and maintain your caffeine addiction.\r\n\r\nAll in all, this must surely be the best place to stay for a student in all of Copenhagen! Though we expect everyone to participate in everyday maintenance we also get to decide many things about which direction we are moving in next. Located in Amager \u2013 a short ride southward from the central city \u2013 the area of is a mix of modern offices, artfully-designed residences and vast open spaces.\r\n<h2>No two apartments are the same<\/h2>\r\nIn \"Signal\" \u2013 as residents affectionately refer to it \u2013 there are four residents per apartment. Each apartment has a kitchen, a small living room, two shared toilets and four individual bedrooms.\r\n\r\nAlthough the units share the same skeleton, no two apartments ever look the same! What strikes you as you enter someone\u2019s apartment is how differently it\u2019s furnished from your own. From sofas to tables, posters to curtains \u2013 every apartment has its individual personality that you may soon grow to recognise as home.\r\n\r\nIn some way, each apartment ends up being a cumulative memory, as the common area inherits the decor and furniture of past tenants. Yet, it is perpetually reshaped by current residents and therein lies the uniqueness of each unit.\r\n<h2>Good room mates are all about luck<\/h2>\r\nBesides the interior, every apartment is also unique due to one crucial element\u2013 the people living in it. With its diverse mix of local and international students, chances are high that you\u2019ll end up living next to someone from halfway across the world!\r\n\r\nHowever, your roommates are not options you can pick and choose. It can be daunting that a factor as important as your apartment mates depends solely upon the luck of the draw. If you\u2019re lucky, you could get a harmonious group dynamic that works like a well-oiled machine. Per contra, variations include unfortunate clashes in personalities but by and large, most maintain cordial relationships with their roommates.\r\n\r\nRegardless of whether you like your roommates, living in a shared apartment certainly entails shared responsibility. The golden rule: Cleaneth up after thyself!\r\n<h2>Needs more communal areas<\/h2>\r\nAs mentioned above, Signal houses a fairly large number of exchange\/international students which imbues the atmosphere with a desire to socialise. Unfortunately, the general consensus is that the architecture of the building does not fully tap upon that potential, nor does it ideally facilitate it.\r\n\r\nThis is due to the lack of communal areas within the building itself. Apart from chance encounters in the laundry room and semi-awkward (just the tiniest bit too long) elevator rides up, it\u2019s hard to meet new people in everyday life.\r\n\r\nThe only communal area is the common room located on the ground floor. It is rather well-equipped with a foosball table, a projector and screen, a disco ball (yeah!) and a full kitchen. However, it has to be booked in advance which makes it a little inconvenient for spontaneous sessions or meetings by chance.\r\n<h2>A constant stream of social events and weekly parties<\/h2>\r\nHowever, that doesn't mean to say social life is non-existent! Firstly, living with apartment mates already creates a good base level of social interaction. This would be less convenient in one-person single units, where many lament the loneliness of independent living. Humans are social creatures after all! Dining together or just sitting around a table, chatting at the end of a long day provides the much-emphasised feeling of hygge.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, there are numerous social events in Signalhuset, publicised via the Facebook group. There are organised tour de chambres, barbecues, hygge sessions, potluck dinners, sports events and many more. These provide excellent opportunities to meet people from all corners of the world (or the block). If you make the effort to socialise, you\u2019ll surely find the friends you\u2019re looking for. And with that many international students, weekly parties are in no short supply!\r\n<h2>Convenient public transport and free laundry<\/h2>\r\nMany choose Signal because the metro (\u00d8restad station) is just a stone\u2019s throw away, making everything highly-accessible. Not to mention, the airport is two S-train stops away which is a brownie point if you foresee a lot of travelling in your future.\r\nBy bike, you can reach KUA in 15-20 minutes via a straightforward route that is manageable even for the most directionally challenged.\r\n\r\nIf nothing above has piqued your interest, then this will surely entice you: free laundry! There are many washing machines and dryers available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (Disclaimer: Much to the dismay of other residents, the offer of free laundry only extends to exchange students.) Don\u2019t scoff at the insignificance of free laundry \u2013 it\u2019s a huge deal when living on a student budget in one of the most expensive cities in the world!\r\n<h2>Amager offers more than you think!<\/h2>\r\nSpeaking of free things, there is a library conveniently located a five-minute walk away, where there are computers for free public use. \u00d8restad Bibliotek provides a conducive place to study when staying in is just too distracting.\r\n\r\nArguably, the largest draw of staying at Signal is its location directly opposite Fields, Scandinavia\u2019s largest shopping mall. Fields is an integral and inescapable part of any Signal resident\u2019s daily life. The gym, Fitness DK, has a large two-level outlet that is open seven days a week. Clothing stores, coffee joint, eating places, electronic stores, beauty stores \u2013 you could easily spend hours perusing all Fields has to offer.\r\n\r\nLast but not least, as a counter to the buildings, there are many green spaces within the vicinity.\r\n\r\nIn conclusion, the distance from the city is merely a small price to pay for all the advantages of staying in Signalhuset. It possesses a youthful atmosphere, a colourful body of residents and enviable amenities. It also affords you the potential of sociability while maintaining your privacy.\r\n\r\nLiving abroad brings a multitude of new experiences, but as the days go by, you begin to recognise your little space as comforting and familiar.
