Model United Nations debate DanMUN 2014 - See the photos here

While many people enjoyed their holiday by taking a well-deserved rest, 60 students gathered for a week of debates on international security and peace at the annual Danish Model United Nations (DanMUN) conference at Frederiksberg Palace.

Among other speakers, DanMUN hosted the American ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, for a talk on his work as a diplomat. He answered questions on America’s role and position in various international relations such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, Africa, and Iraq.

DanMUN is an organisation for students who want insight into the work at the UN, as they get to test their own skills as diplomats in a simulation of the real UN Security Council. As representatives from 15 different nations, they were to discuss this year’s topic “The seas of China – from Regional Tensions to International Conflict”.

From delegates to couples

International Business and Politics student, Pernille Borgbo participates in DanMUN because she sees it as an “opportunity to learn about different national political perspectives”, and to meet a lot of interesting people she says.

Even though DanMUN adopts the formal tone from the real UN Security Council, it is also very much a social event for young people. ”Several former participants are actually now couples”, says Andrea Coloma, one of the organisers of DanMUN.
