Seaweed ice cream? Time for Science in the City

Free and interactive science festival alongside ESOF conference will bring science to the public from 21 - 26 June

Time for some hands-on science: Get your sperm analyzed, drive an electric car, and climb into a giant toilet. Hang out in a solar charging hammock. Science, in other words, is to hit the city of Copenhagen.

Europe’s largest interdisciplinary science forum, Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), will host a free festival for the public from 21 – 26 June. This festival will also take place at Carlsberg city, with interactive events throughout the week.

Solar-powered hammock

KopenLab will be showcasing do-it-yourself projects and pieces from open citizen science, from Bio-art installations, open experiment zones, and DIY-electronics that show scientific twists on everyday devices. KopenLab focuses on interactivity and hands-on science exploration, and will be running throughout the week.

There will be two ‘floating laboratories’ on boats at Amaliehavn. You can take tours of the giant research vessels and learn about food production using marine life, and try seaweed ice cream.

On Saturday 21 June from 2-4 pm, you can try out a hammock from the Alexandra Institute that has solar cells sewn inside the fabric. The coolest part? It can charge your cell phone while you relax in the sun!

Play doctor

On Saturday 21 June, children and adults can play doctor, and have their beloved stuffed animals treated for various illnesses.

For something slightly more realistic, you can also step into the view of real doctors and surgeons on Saturday at 10 am, where the Alexandra Institute lets you try virtual surgery using 3D glasses.

Side note: veterinary students operate on stuffed animals too! Check out the article here.

Get involved

The event list is long, and can be found on their website, here. The best way to experience Science in the City is to go out and explore!

Science in the City is still looking for volunteers, which will also give you free access to the ESOF conference. Volunteers can register here.
