Royal visit to ‘Day of Research’

Royal official opening of ‘The Day of Research’ by HRH Princess Mary stirred up crowds of curious students, visitors and journalists as she got a tour of the science booths at Vor Frue Plads outside the University of Copenhagen ceremonial hall. By her side were bodyguards, minister of Education Morten Østergaard, Dean Ralf Hemmingsen and other university VIPs. The Crown Princess was also responsible for presenting the 2012 ‘Prize for Science Communication’ [‘Forskningskommunikationsprisen’, ed.] at a closed reception.

The Day of Research [‘Forskningens Døgn’, ed.] has been held since 2005 and is organized by The Ministry of Education. HRH Crown Princess Mary is protector of ‘The Day of Research’. This year the University of Copenhagen is co-host of the event.

The event lasts three days and is open for everyone. Vor Frue Plads will be packed with scientific booths sharing the latest buzz in Danish research today. When royalty are not present, sheep, liquid Nitrogen, stones and microscopes are among the many curiosities that will catch visitors’ attention.

The winner of the 2012 ‘Prize for Science Communication’ is renowned neuroscientist Albert Gjedde. The prize was handed over to him by HRH Crown Princess Mary at a closed ceremony open only to university VIPs, press and invited high school classes. Apart from the honor of receiving the prize, Albert Gjedde also received a cash prize of DKK 100.000.

University Post was present at the official opening of ‘The Day of Research’ both at the closed reception and at the packed Vor Frue Plads.
