2,100 staff, students to race DHL

Biggest fun-run in Europe, if not the world, is a huge social event for the University of Copenhagen

Right now, more than 2,100 staff and students are mentally visualising a sprint of five kilometres.

The University of Copenhagen has entered more than 400 teams of five runners for tonight’s race, representing staff and students from throughout the campuses. The DHL race is one of the biggest fun-runs in the world with 130,000 runners participating over several days.

Monday is the University of Copenhagen’s day, sending 401 teams of five to the race. While a small bunch of ’professional’ track teams usually take the top spots, the focus for staff and students is normally the internal ranking among University of Copenhagen teams, gathering staff and students in a spirit of (sometimes) friendly rivalry.

University Post first… with results

Last year, the Institute of Food Economics took the title as fastest University of Copenhagen team with 1:39:00. But the five men from Food Economics were only six seconds ahead of a team from the Faculty of Life Sciences that were competing in the four man, one woman category.

This year, the University Post has interviewed a team, Systems Biology that is almost certain that they are going to win. If previous years’ results are anything to go by, they will meet stiff competition from teams from Food Economics, Sports Science, and teams of nuclear physicists from the Niels Bohr Institute.

As well as running the race ourselves, we at the the University Post have a flock of reporters and photographers at the event. We will be the first to release the top ten University of Copenhagen results Tuesday midday.

So watch this space for the best and most up-to-date coverage of university running teams, how they place, and for photos and film clips from Fælledparken.
