Media department attracts internationals

Full-degree students flock to the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication. The courses are pragmatic and of high quality, student says

Full-degree student Anna-Maria from Romania was one of the first students in a Master’s programme for Cognition and Communication. The programme was set up in 2009 by the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication and was specifically designed for English speaking students.

»I chose to study here because of this specific programme in communication, but also because the education system in Denmark is famous for its high quality. And EU citizens do not pay any tuition fee, so that is great too«, says Anna-Maria.

The department currently has 64 registered full-degree students. The department offers English-language courses in Film Studies, Media Studies, Philosophy and Cognition and Communication.

»We had a lot of exchange students asking how to take a full-degree at the department. That was one of the motives for offering master’s degrees in English and drawing up curriculums. But it is also a part of the university’s overall strategy to focus on internationalization«, says Jan Riis Flor, Head of the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication.

Diverse environment

The department has a full-time working international officer and has hired a coordinator to find mentors for the international students and to organize social events.

»It is important to be able to attract international students, as more Danish students in the future will go abroad. Moreover, it is rewarding to have students from various cultures, as they bring different views to class«, Jan Riis Flor explains.

Even though students’ diverse backgrounds can cause extra challenges for staff, according to Jan Riis Flor, he is open to setting up more courses offered in English and maybe even a new programme.

Pragmatic courses

Anna-Maria is one of the students profiting from the department’s international focus. She is pleased with her choice of study.

»I know it is the right thing for me. The professors are good and the courses are pragmatic«, Anna-Maria says.
