Prominent Danish politician dies in bike race

Jan Trøjborg, a former minister, prominent mayor, and a central figure in the Social Democratic party, died during an amateur bike race in connection with the massive Giro d'Italia event in Jutland Sunday

Jan Trøjborg was only 56 years old. According to officials at the scene, Mr Trøjborg had a heart attack and fell off his bike approximately halfway through the race. He overturned into a ditch, and immediate resuscitation took place. He was then taken by helicopter to Aarhus University Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, reports Seven59.dk and other media Sunday.

Mr Trøjborg was one of former Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen’s (Social Democrats) most trusted ministers throughout the 1990s and into this millennium. Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt (Social Democrats) was visibly shaken by the news.

»It is terrible, and an incredible loss for all of us. I and all who knew Trøjborg are so sad today – we can hardly understand what happened. I will miss Trøjborg for what he was – a good buddy you could rely on.«
