About the thesis

This PhD comprises an exploratory study on infants with excessive weight gain during exclusive breastfeeding.

Human milk intake and composition, blood samples, growth and body composition from birth to 18 months in infants with excessive weight gain were compared to a group of infants with normal weight gain. The excessive weight gain during the first 5 months was followed by a marked catch-down in growth after introduction to complementary foods.

Human milk leptin was low in the group of infants with excessive weight and was negatively associated with milk intake at 5 months suggesting that human milk intake and composition was a cause of the excessive weight gain.
