For this event, Rethinking Economics will provide an insight into how mainstream economics – the common type of economic theory used worldwide – shapes both ideas and actions on what is possible tackling the climate crisis and what isn’t.
Together, we will explore how mainstream economic theory and its alternatives of ecological economics and doughnut economics, are underpinned by different assumptions about human nature and its environment. We uncover how such assumptions frame climate action and to what extent they are sufficiently suited for acting upon today’s crisis.
By using concrete examples, we will introduce how decisions at political level are influenced by economics through the lens of a socio-economic analysis. We will highlight what is given the status of importance – and more importantly what is not. How are nature, well-being, biodiversity, clean drinking water and future generations valued in calculations meant to inform live-changing political decisions?
Finally, we will introduce valuable tools from ecological economics that are already gaining ground both nationally and internationally.
The participants will gain an insight into:
How mainstream economics functions as a barrier for climate action
Which assumptions and methods are actively influencing climate politics
How ecological economics is essential in assisting a green and just future
The event is a STIMULUS event. For all students. For free. Joint dinner at the end of the event.
