The incident occurred in the ministerial car on the way to work, where Søvndal was set to meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, reports Seven59.dk.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister was later at a University of Copenhagen event here.
61 year-old Sovndal was uncomfortable in the morning and complained of chest pain. An ambulance was called, and Søvndal underwent an angioplasty, and people who have visited him after surgery, says he is doing well, and is expected to return to work quickly.
Søvndal was also set to participate in meetings in relation to the Global Green Growth Institute, GGGI, which has been in the spolight recently over misuse of government funds on travel expenses.
Annette Vilhelmsen, Ministry of Social Affairs and Integratuion, says ”Søvndal has undergone successful surgery this morning. Our thoughts go out to both Søvndal and his family. We look forward to to seeing Villy back at work again, but right now it’s important to give Villy and his family time to recover in peace and quiet.”
