Health science fitness room has a nice view

The new, glass-paned fitness centre at the top of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences' Panum building gives staff the opportunity to exercise with a view and a half

Eleven years ago, a modest basement room at Panum housed the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences’ Motionsforening (Exercise Union). Now the union has moved into brand new rooms, with what may well be the best view of any Danish gym, at the top of Panum.

The Faculty staff can work out whenever they want – nights and weekends included – with room to stretch. Team work-outs and a spinning team are being set up. To join, all one has to do is become a member of the union, and be an employee at the Faculty.

Already nearly fully booked

According to the Head of Motionsforeningen, Ingrid Anne Kryhlmand, the fitness centre is a ‘product of grass roots work’, aiming to offer the Faculty staff a way to stay in shape.

»Eleven years ago, myself and others started a group, asking members of staff if they wanted to help establish a gym, and how much they would be willing to pay for it. 500 people said they would, and then we began,« she said to our Danish sister site, Universitetsavisen.dk

Today the union has more than 400 members out of the Faculty’s three to four thousand employees. They pay DKK 90 per month.
