Back from a vacation in China, the famed statue found her way back to her perch Saturday
Hundreds of tourists and locals clutched Danish flags at Langelinie Saturday afternoon as they watched the icon of Copenhagen maneuver into the harbour.
The Little Mermaid, a statue commemorating fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen’s famous tale, had made a six-month long appearance in Shanghai for the World Expo, and has returned to her historic location for good, officials say.
At the installment ceremony, city mayor Frank Jensen gave a speech welcoming the mermaid back to Copenhagen. The Chinese Ambassador to Denmark also read a poem honouring the statue, saying that China will miss her, and appreciates the peace she brought to Shanghai. After the speeches, the mermaid was lowered by crane onto the rock where she has resided for nearly 100 years.
