Campus

New Social Science extension on the way

Now it is just a construction site, but the Faculty of Social Sciences will gain from an intelligent new building in 2013

The construction site on the edge of the Faculty of Social Sciences might not look too appealing, but the campus is expecting to benefit from a new build in 2013.

The new building will expand the campus with new teaching spaces for the growing number of University of Copenhagen students. It will also become the shared home for another set of very different pupils.

It will provide more space for a city-centre kindergarten, which was originally housed on the site, and is currently in a temporary location.

Archaeology could hold back construction

The smart building design provides both benefactors privacy and security. Access for university students will be possible only through the campus, while children at the kindergarten will use a separate street entrance.

»There is no interlink within the building,« Christina Holbøll, a department administrator at CSS, explains. »It has been designed in an intelligent way.«

The building’s expected completion date is currently set for September 2013. However staff within CSS have not ruled out that it could take longer due to Danish laws which would hault construction if any archaeologically significant findings are made on the site.

Big and small students to benefit

»This is not unlikely, it being in the centre of Copenhagen,« Christina says.

But if all goes to plan, students from both the university and kindergarten will benefit from their smart new building in the not too distant future.
