Sweden: Fees for international students

Admission fees to curb the rising tide of international applications

The Swedish government is discussing the introduction of tuition fees for students from outside the European Union, writes universityworldnews.com.

Application fees for international students could be charged from next year, and tuition fees from 2011.

The Swedish government hope the application fee of around SEK 1000 will discourage the least serious of the over 100,000 applications received from non-European applicants.

Tuitions led to 40 pct. decrease in Denmark

The introduction of an application fee for non-European applicants in Denmark in 2006 has led to a 40 percent decrease in the number of overseas applications.

To address the decline, the Danish government has among other things established a number of scholarships for international students in climate studies.

Swedish authorities are still discussing how to introduce fees without losing top brains from abroad.
