Codenamed Cuba and Alaska, two field medics serving in the Ukrainian army, regard the absurdity of war with a combination of grit, humor and hope. Since the summer of 2022, director Yegor Troyanovsky has followed the two Ukrainian women and documented their lives on the frontlines. Mostly comprising footage from phones and helmet cameras, the film offers rare insight into the medics’ daily lives, their reliance on each other a testament to the camaraderie required to survive. But when one of them is injured and they are separated, the realisation of how despairing conflict can be gradually sinks in. A raw and powerful film, Cuba & Alaska tells a story of longing for a life without war, and is an essential reminder of the importance of human connection, especially when hope feels scarce.

The film screening is co-hosted with the Ukraine House in Denmark. Co-founder and Chairperson of Ukraine House, Nataliya Popovych, will introduce the film. After the film, the audience is invited to connect with each other over some Ukrainian snacks and music in Asta Bar. The event will be in English.
