Similar events have been held in recent years at institutions such as Harvard University, Glasgow University, and the Peace Research Institute in Oslo. To our knowledge, this will be the first seminar on Decolonising Global Health at the University of Copenhagen. We hope it will spark conversations that ripple through the university, provoking students and professors to critically reflect on their assumptions, subconscious prejudices and the whiteness of their curriculum.

Day 1 will be led by Mica Oh, a local activist who has years of experience educating white people about racism from an intersectional feminist perspective. A philosopher, public speaker and writer, she leads regular workshops as “Hende den Intersektionelle Feminist” (Her, the Intersectional Feminist). She will utilise a blend of lectures and small group work to deliver lessons on key topics such as structural racism, whiteness, privilege, and white saviourism.

Day 2 will be led by Dr Adrián Groglopo, a scholar with extensive experience in the area of decolonising academia from the Department of Social Work, University of Gothenburg. He is project leader for the research network “Decolonial critique, knowledge production and social change in the Nordic countries” (DENOR), and has conducted research on the intersection of  racism, anti-racism, coloniality and capitalism, feminism, politics, and health. This session will dive into terminology and concepts in decolonisation, how these apply to academia and more specifically to Global Health.

We strongly recommend that participants attend on both days. The concepts taught by Mica will lay vital foundation for Day 2, helping participants to achieve a deeper engagement and understanding. We hope this two-day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity and tools to critically analyse their own motivations for working in their chosen field, as well as reflecting on how they can use their platforms to disrupt harmful power structures and amplify marginalised voices.
