Title

What Does a Language Model Know About Language?

Abstract

Modern NLP is based on large pre-trained language models. We expect these models to acquire some grammatical knowledge such as the ability to understand the part of speech of a word or the semantic roles in a sentence. Edge probing tests or diagnostic classifiers are very simple tests for such knowledge. I will talk about this paradigm, the challenges, the results, and some of my own research in this area.
