Nine-Tenths of the Law. Enduring Dispossession in Indonesia

For many people in Indonesia, rights remain a faint promise, and justice, a mere rumour. Consequently, ordinary people in rural and urban settings exert tremendous energy and imagination to have land claims recognized as legal rights. The book is dedicated to a detailed analysis of how actors try to lock makeshift settlements into durable structures of recognition through improvised legalisation and imaginative reference to law.

Christian Lund heads the global development section at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO). He is the author of Law, Power, and Politics in Niger and Local Politics and the Dynamics of Property in Africa.
