Open seminar with Ugur Soytas, DTU Management.

A recent report, by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017), documents that the polluted environment causes 1.7 million under-5 children deaths every year. The environmental pollution can be attributed to air pollution, lack of safe drinking water, sanitation and inadequate hygiene. Given that, this study is designed to investigate the effect of access to renewable energy, safe sanitation and water sources on infant mortality, child mortality and life expectancy after controlling for female education, per capita income and government expenditure. The study uses annual data from 1995 to 2015 on a sample of 69 countries around the world. We employ a battery of recently developed panel econometric techniques which account for cross-sectional dependence and endogeneity in the model. The empirical findings across various estimates confirm that the renewable energy consumption, female education, per capita income and basic needs have an important role in curtailing infant and child mortalities. The robustness check results on access to the safe sanitation and water facilities in the rural areas indicate that the basic amenities have a greater role in preventing infant and child mortalities.
