The Department of Chemistry warns it's research staff against doing certain types of chemistry while a damaged ventilator is fixed. This is according to the latest newsletter from the department.
The disabled ventilator, which is in building B, is now being repaired, the department says.
»Mending the machinery is reasonably banal,« says engineer Sven Bo Madsen of Campus Byg, as none of the most sensitive parts have been broken.
But there is no prognosis as to when the ventilator will be back in place.
In the newsletter, Head of Department Mikael Bols warns against doing chemistry that demands ventilation in the west-end of building B, »nor of storing ill-smelling chemicals in fume cupboards there«, adding that if for some reason storage is inevitable he or his colleague Klaus Bechgård will oversee the necessary measures.
Mikael Bols warns that chemists in building B should be »even more careful than usual, as spills will have greater consequences. Staff wanting to be removed from B-building for the duration can count on office-space in building C or D, but there is no guarantee of labspace.
Meanwhile, as the ventilator in the eastern end of building B is of the same make as the damaged one, engineer Sven Bo Madsen plans to take it down for inspection too.
A contingency plan is being worked out in anticipation of »a disaster of a breakdown of the second ventilator«, the newsletter writes.
